Miniature railway set for new home in Calderstones Park

A popular miniature railway is on course to move to a new home in Calderstones Park.

The attraction run by Merseyside Live Steam & Model Engineers is seeking the go-ahead to relocate from its current location on Harthill Road to a patch of land to the west of Menlove Avenue.

The miniature railway is relocating as the land it currently occupies is being developed, with Liverpool City Council actively helping the organisation secure a new site.

Arthur Brooks, chair of Merseyside Live Steam & Model Engineers, tells Your Move: “The council didn’t want to shut us down because we are a popular attraction, so they have agreed to rehome us to a site of our choosing within Calderstones Park.

“We were offered several sites in the park, all of which were excellent, but Menlove Avenue was the only one which was really suitable for a miniature railway. It’s virtually flat and wide open which means we can build easily on there.”

Arthur goes on to say that the railway, which has been in operation for more than 70 years, will potentially be able to expand if it moves to a more prominent location in Calderstones Park.

He adds: “The move will give us a lot of opportunity to expand because our current site is virtually closed off and isn’t exactly in a location we can advertise. So we’re hoping that we will be able to attract more visitors if we are in a better place in the park.”

Merseyside Live Steam & Model Engineers is yet to receive clarification on when its rehoming will be given the green light but Albert says the group is hoping to continue operating “without a break” if the move goes ahead.
