Further investment is needed in housing for the north of Liverpool, according to the head of planning at Liverpool City Council.

Speaking yesterday (1 December) at ArchitEx 2015, David Hughes explained how the council’s latest partnership with Redrow and Liverpool Mutual Homes is aimed at delivering housing to the ‘hollowed-out’ areas, particularly in the north of the city.

David said: “We have clear council targets of developing over 5,000 houses and the hard part is not actually getting developers into the southern part of the city, which has a lot of demand. The question is how we get these developers to address the ‘hollowed-out’ areas in the north.”

Known as the Liverpool Housing Partnership, property contractor Willmott Dixon is also part of the scheme that recently saw the first 600 homes approved by Liverpool City Council.

David revealed that 3,500 homes are currently being built across the city, with a further 20,000 planned for with consent. Liverpool’s student population is a major factor behind residential developments in the city centre, David explained that there are “more than 50,000 students in the city and they are constantly driving demand for good quality accommodation in the city centre”.

David was speaking at ArchitEx 2015, an annual exhibition and conference for the UK architecture and building design industry. Move Commercial is media partner for the event that runs until from 1 – 2 December at St George’s Hall.
