New energy supplier to tackle fuel poverty in Liverpool

Householders in Liverpool could soon take advantage of cheaper energy bills as the launch of a new not-for-profit supplier has moved a step closer.

Liverpool City Council has recommended the contract for Liverpool LECCY, which is being created to tackle fuel poverty in Merseyside, should be awarded to Robin Hood Energy Limited.

Liverpool LECCY will offer gas and electricity at a cheaper rate than mainstream energy firms and aims to replace pre-payment meters with the latest SMART meters, which are more cost effective.

Councillor Steve Munby, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, says: “The new energy company will be an extremely important way of combating fuel poverty which affects far too many households in Liverpool.

“We want to give people the opportunity to have their gas and electricity supplied by a company where profit is not the main consideration and to provide an alternative to the big six energy companies.

“The new company will be owned by and run for Liverpool people. We have been seeking a supplier which is able to help our residents cut their energy bills. The recommendation to the cabinet is a major step forward in getting Liverpool LECCY up and running and we are looking for it to be operating early next year.”

The decision to award the Liverpool LECCY contract to Nottingham-based Robin Hood Energy Limited will be considered at a council meeting on 11 November.
