New residential developments within Peel’s Liverpool Waters regeneration zone will boost Liverpool’s Commonwealth Games bid, according to Mayor Joe Anderson.

The council leader believes regeneration initiatives in the north docklands, which also include projects like Everton Football Club’s proposed new stadium, will make the city a prime candidate to host the multi-sports event.

Mayor Anderson says: “Peel’s vision for the stadium site also includes retail, leisure, green space and accommodation. There will be private rental sector units and all of that could be used for the athletes village and then sold on after the games.

“There are two unique opportunities within the city that I don’t think other destinations have got – one, that we’re building a new stadium and, two, that we’ll need apartments and flats constructed around it. By marrying these two together, we can provide what is needed for the Commonwealth Games.”

Liverpool is bidding to host the Commonwealth Games in either 2022 or 2026 and Mayor Anderson’s comments follow the appointment of a dedicated team to spearhead the campaign.

Sports executive Brian Barwick, chair of the Rugby Football League, Super League Europe, the National League and a member of the FA Council, will chair the group, with Everton FC director Dr Denise Barrett-Baxendale on board as his deputy. Denise is also the chair of Everton in the Community.

Liverpool made its ambitions to stage the 2022 event known after the South African city of Durban was unable to provide the necessary financial guarantees required of a games host.

Cities interested in holding the 2022 tournament have until 28 April to inform the Commonwealth Games Federation, which will then aim to name a new host “as quickly as possible”.
