Plans to build almost 130 new homes on a social club playing field in St Helens have been recommended for approval.

The proposals from Countryside, which have been met with strong opposition, will go before St Helens Council’s planning committee next week (5 December).

The national housebuilder wants to create a new development of 129 properties on a playing field and part of a car park to the south of Sidac Social Club, off Leach Lane.

Under a separate application, Countryside is proposing the creation of replacement facilities for Sidac Football Club on land in Sherdley Park, near Sutton Leisure Centre.

These facilities would include a new playing field, changing rooms and a 42-space car park for the club’s two senior and 22 junior teams.

Both applications have been recommended for approval by St Helens Council’s planning committee next week.

According to a report to be discussed by the council “41 independent letters, three cycle style letters and 56 objection slips” were received in objection to the housing development.

Objectors fear the development could lead to a drop in housing prices in the area and many were also disappointed with the proposed loss of the playing fields.

A document recommending both applications for approval reads: “The proposals would generally comply with the provisions of the development plan and other material considerations.

“They are considered to be sustainable developments and should therefore be granted planning permission subject to the following conditions and the signing of a Section 106 legal agreement.”
