Details of the ninth edition of the Liverpool Biennial have been announced with the festival set to get underway on 9 July 2016 through to 16 October.

Over three months of contemporary art events are planned across the entire landscape of the city, organised as a story narrated in several episodes: fictional worlds found in galleries, museums, pubs, stations, hotels, car parks, shops and supermarkets.

A number of these episodes draw on Liverpool’s present, past and future – for example, the Chinatown arch will be reimagined as a portal through time and space, connecting with other Chinatowns across the world.

In a first for the Biennial, local children will have the chance to work alongside artists and the production team to develop exciting exhibitions and projects aimed at younger audiences.

Liverpool Biennial has also unveiled a list of 37 artists who will produce all new works for the festival, chief among the list is 2008 Turner prize winner and Birkenhead-born Mark Leckey. The works will be on display in a number of locations across Liverpool including at Tate Liverpool, FACT, Bluecoat and Open Eye.

Other stand out names include Mexico’s Mariana Castillo Deball, American Jason Dodge and Palestinian-born Jumana Manna.

“We are looking forward to working with artists from Asia, India, North and South America, the Middle East, Russia and Europe in the city. It is exciting to bring these artists together with the people of Liverpool to make this a place where art and artists can thrive and to create a focus for international contemporary art.”
