Much of the original Rapid hardware store on Renshaw Street looks set to be transformed into serviced apartments.

Liverpool City Council’s planning committee is expected to approve revised plans for the scheme, which also include commercial space, at a meeting next week.

Original plans for the redevelopment were submitted last August and included 160 flats spread across 11 storeys.

The new application proposes the demolition of 48-54 Renshaw Street, and the erection of a new seven-storey building to provide 114 serviced apartments.

According to the plans brought forward by YPG Renshaw St, the proposals have been altered in response to objections raised by both the Victorian Society and Save Britain’s Hertiage, who welcome the proposed retention of more of the building’s façade.

The planning report adds: “The interim head of planning is satisfied that with the revisions secured, the design, sale and massing of the development is acceptable within the wider context.

“The interim head of planning also considers that the reduction in height having a positive benefit on the street scene, no longer dominates the overall sweeping view of the existing façade to the benefit of the setting of St. Luke’s and the defined vista up Renshaw Street.”

The planning committee will consider the application next Tuesday (27 June).
