Plans have been submitted for a new purpose-built school accommodating up to 420 pupils in Old Swan.
St Anne (Stanley) Church of England Primary School could relocate from its existing Prescot Road premises to the nearby vacant site, which was previously occupied by Liverpool’s fruit and veg market.
The proposed two-storey building would provide approximately 25,833 sq ft of floorspace for children from nursery through to Year 6.
Plans include modern classrooms and dedicated spaces for ICT, practical learning and pupils with special educational needs and disabilities, alongside flexible halls for assemblies, performances and community events.
An indoor sports hall, sports field, outdoor play areas and landscaped grounds designed to support biodiversity and outdoor learning also form part of the scheme.
Documents submitted with the application say the school’s existing building is in poor condition and has required several rounds of underpinning to address subsidence.
Its limited outdoor space, poor energy efficiency and ongoing maintenance problems are also said to restrict the school’s ability to provide a modern learning environment.
The design of the proposed school draws on the history of the former market site, with its shape inspired by traditional market halls. Red detailing would reference the colour once associated with the fruit market’s stalls and signage, while the wider building would be finished primarily in red brick.
Tilbury Douglas is the project’s main contractor, with Arcadis serving as architect.
The Liverpool Wholesale Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Market in Old Swan closed permanently in 2018 after serving the region for more than half a century. Traders relocated to a new £7 million purpose-built facility on Electric Avenue in Gillmoss.
