Liverpool’s Snowflake Trail will be unveiled today (30 November) with the help of snow cannons and a children’s choir.

The launch event will also include switching on the Church Street Christmas tree lights, the FACT Snowflake Generator and the interactive music-making sculpture ‘Illumaphonium’ at Bluecoat.

The Lord Mayor will be joined by Bill Addy, chief executive of Liverpool BID, and Broughton Hall Catholic High School choir for the event which gets underway at 5.50pm.

After the choir has performed, the crowd will countdown to 6pm when the Christmas tree lights will be switched on and the snow cannons set off.

Meanwhile in the courtyard at Bluecoat, from today, the public have the chance to play the Illumaphonium, a unique instrument created by Michael Davis. Standing over three and half meters tall and consisting of more than 200 illuminated chime bars, the Illumaphonium responds to touch with changing patterns of light and sound spreading out like waves over the surface.

Up on Wood Street, a giant light window will take over the front of FACT and will allow visitors to tweet in to have their own personal virtual snowflake appear on the screen.

The Snowflake Trail is returning for the third year in a row and will see 12 snowflake sculptures, which have been decorated by local and national artists, scattered across the city centre.

The fibreglass snowflakes, which measure in at 1.5m tall and 1.36m wide, provide a blank canvass for artists to showcase their work during the Christmas period.
