Liverpool’s new Luminous Landscapes festival gets underway tonight (18 February) and organisers have confirmed it has sold out.

The three-day event at Liverpool Festival Gardens is being held by the Lantern Company, and is the first in the city since the organisation was forced to cancel its annual Halloween Lantern Carnival in 2015 due to a lack of funds.

Support and funding from Liverpool City Council’s Culture Liverpool, Arts Council England and Granada Foundation, as well as donations from the public, have contributed to the new attraction which is set to be visited by more than 9,000 people.

Ahead of this evening’s 5.30pm opening Jo Pocock, artistic director of the Lantern Company, says: “We are delighted to be able to announce Luminous Landscapes as a sold out event.

“The gardens are already looking really magical and we are looking forward to giving our audiences three very special evenings.”

Transforming the woodlands of Liverpool Festival Gardens into a strange, luminous setting bringing what is usually hidden beneath lake beds and forest floors to the surface, the event aims to raise environmental issues relating to landfill and recycling.

During the run up to the event, more than 1,000 local people have taken part in arts workshops to create lanterns and accessories to be carried each night.

Luminous Landscapes will be open from 5.30-9pm on 18-20 February.
