How much do you trust your tattoo artist? One tattoo studio in Wirral has recently launched an event which will see one lucky applicant receive a tattoo, valued at up to £1,000, free of charge.
The catch? The customer won’t have any design input, they won’t see their tattoo artwork in advance and they won’t see any part of the tattoo process. The first time they will see their new (large!) tattoo is when it’s finished.
Announcing plans for the ‘blind tattoo’ on social media, Nomad Ink expected applications to max out in single figures but the response was incredible.
After two days, the studio was forced to close the competition to new applicants and were tasked with narrowing down the hopefuls to around 25.
Following rounds of questionnaires and face-to-face meetings, the 25 were whittled down to a final two.
Art work was created for both finalists, a process which was supposed to help decide a winner, however, unable to choose between them, it was decided that both finalists will receive their ‘blind tattoo’.
On 22 February, the first of the winning candidates, Jon Richards from Wallasey, will go under the needle. The second successful contestant, Ruth Redfearn, will travel from Devon in April to do the same.
The artist responsible for the ‘blind tattoo’, Lewis Sherlock, wants those chosen for this unique opportunity to love their new tattoo. He says the aim is to create something fresh and adventurous – a piece of art that reflects the client in a way they may not have thought of.
Lewis did not have a preconceived idea of the design he would create for the winner. It depended entirely on the information gathered about who they are, what they’re about and what makes them tick.
The team at Nomad says there were many reasons given by applicants for wanting to take part in the process, many of them moving, but there was one common thread running through them all – every applicant wanted to do something that satisfied their desire to be daring and carefree.
Some had overcome illness or personal tragedy. Some had made major personal achievements and were looking to reflect their strength and courage. Others simply felt they have always lived on the safe side of life and had reached an age where they want to let go.
