As Britain basks in the glory of Team GB’s golden Rio Olympics performance, a nationwide sports day will take place tomorrow (Saturday 27 August) and Liverpool City Region sporting fans are invited to take part.
‘I Am Team GB’, organised by the National Lottery and ITV, will see thousands of free activities get underway across the country and there’s plenty of action right here in the region.
We’ve rounded up some of the sporting highlights bringing the chance for you to get active in a group or try your hand at some Olympic favourites.
Olympics Rio2016 event FREE at Dolphin Fencing Club
11am-1pm
Dolphin Fencing Club, Eshe Road, Waterloo, L23
Ever fancied having a go at fencing? Well now’s your chance to try it for free!
Dolphin’s special taster sessions will showcase electric and steam fencing bouts and teach you all you need to know about the exciting sport and its equipment.
Attendees aged eight to 12, 12+ and adults will have chance to watch, socialise or join in, and refreshments will also be provided.
Saturday morning ride from Otterspool Prom
10am-12pm
Starting at Otterspool Café, Liverpool, L17
If golden girl Laura Trott has inspired you to get on a bike, why not head down to this special traffic-free cycling event for women and children.
Led by Mel Connell, the I Am Team GB ride will follow a route through Liverpool’s Festival Gardens.
Liverpool Ladies FC and LFC Foundation Celebration
3-6pm
Liverpool Ladies FC, Lower House Lane, Widnes, WA8
This multisport event could inspire the next generation of Team GB Olympians as children will have chance to try out a range of sports.
Young participants at the fun-filled event will also be invited to stay and watch Liverpool Ladies FC take on Donny Belles in its WSL1 match for free afterwards.
Churchtown T20 Bash
11am-6pm
Churchtown Cricket Club, Roe Lane, Southport, PR9
Continuing the carnival of Rio, this Twenty20 cricket day will see games for children, ladies and men accompanied by a samba band, games and refreshments.
If you’re more of a spectator, the main event will come at 2pm with Churchtown vs Old Record Players XI.
Chavasse Park mini sporting village
10am-6pm
Chavasse Park, Liverpool ONE, L1
This mini sporting village which has been in place over the summer will really come into its own during I Am Team GB.
As well as chance to celebrate a gymnastics, track, cycling or table tennis victory on the park’s own winners’ podium, the national sports day will also see taster sessions of sports taking place at the Pier Head.
Become a Judo Olympian
10.30am-12pm
Linacre Road, Bootle, Liverpool, L21
This free taster session will explore the art of judo, showing participants how to fall with ease as well as how to throw and pin fellow players, known as Judokas.
