The University of Liverpool has confirmed it is to sell off the Carnatic Halls of Residence site in Mossley Hill.

In a letter to local residents, the University says the “ageing nature” of the buildings on the South Liverpool site means it “no longer meets the current needs of the University’s students”.

The University took the decision to close Carnatic Student Village last year as part of its long-term residential strategy which has seen the opening of two new accommodation sites on campus and the refurbishment of the nearby Greenbank Student Village.

A pre-application report was issued to Liverpool City Council in November 2018 which considered the redevelopment of the Carnatic site for residential purposes to be acceptable in principle.

The University says it plans to take the site to market this month and is hoping to choose a purchaser or housing developer within six weeks.

Once a prospective purchaser has been chosen, it is likely they will prepare a planning application to be submitted within three to four months.

A full public consultation will be carried out as part of the planning process.
