Phil Redmond will stay on as chair of National Museums Liverpool (NML) until January 2017, it has been announced.

The Brookside creator, who took up the role in 2008, heads up a board of trustees which rules on major issues relating to the city’s museums and art galleries.

Phil succeeded television presenter Loyd Grossman during Liverpool’s year as Capital of Culture, initially for a period of four years, this was extended by a further four years in August 2012.

Culture Secretary John Whittingdale has now confirmed his tenure will continue until 1 January 2017.

Phil served on Liverpool’s Capital of Culture board from November 2006, eventually as deputy chair and also as creative director from September 2007.

In 2011 he became the chair of the Institute for Cultural Capital, a joint venture between Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Liverpool and is also chair of UK City of Culture Independent Advisory Panel.
