Plans for a new residential development on land in Kirkdale where a cinema and bingo hall once stood have been recommended for approval.

Proposals for five townhouses and 32 apartments will go before Liverpool City Council’s planning committee next week .

Situated on the corner of Selwyn and Brewster Street where the Princess Cinema once stood, the part three, four and five-storey scheme would be a mix of townhouses, studios, and one, two and three bedroom flats.

A small commercial unit is also proposed for the building’s ground floor.

A planning application for the project submitted by JJC Developments Ltd reads: “The designed scheme celebrates the site, complements the use, scale and massing of its surroundings and has a potential to become a visual destination of the area.

“When built it will contribute positively to its urban context. It will regenerate a prominent site that has been forgotten for a considerable amount of time.”

The council’s planning committee will decide whether to approve the plans when it meets next Tuesday (7 August).

The Princess Cinema first opened in 1931 with seating for 760 people in the stalls and 700 in the circle.

Closed in October 1966, it was converted into a bingo hall which eventually shut in 2000. The site has lain empty ever since the building was demolished in 2016.
