An academy dedicated to Brazilian fight-dance activity Capoeira is to open in Liverpool at the site of the former Cain’s Brewery.

Mestre Parente will launch the academy, which is the first of its kind in the region, at the new Northern Lights creative space on 7 November.

The Capoeira classes will allow students of all levels to take part in the discipline and learn about its techniques and traditions.

Mestre Parente, who teaches the martial art as part of the dance degree courses at Edge Hill University and Manchester College, has previously performed at venues including Africa Oye, The Slavery Museum, The Beatles Festival and Tate Liverpool.

He says: “Capoeira was created by African slaves in Brazil in the 17th Century as a form of self-defence hidden in dance. But it is taught all over the world today and is suitable for everyone. It will improve your coordination, flexibility and strength, but more than that – it’s a social activity that improves confidence, inter-personal connections and forms communities.

“The new academy will be a place for capoeiristas to train the discipline, learn music and songs, dance and socialise. There will be classes for all ages and abilities several times per week, and beginners are always welcome.”
