Two hundred artists and over 250 new works of art created by Liverpool and UK based artists will flood the Liverpool City Region when the Independents’ Biennial gets underway next month.
Special commissions will take place in St Helens, Sefton, Wirral, Knowsley and Liverpool during the four-month festival which runs alongside Liverpool Biennial.
Taking place from from 14 July – 28 October, the festival celebrates grassroots art and emerging artists.
Instead of being asked to respond to a festival theme, like its sister event Liverpool Biennial, artists are invited via open call.
Each of the four festival commissions will take place in key locations across the city region including Williamson Art Gallery, Rimrose Valley in Sefton and in St Helens town centre.
In Liverpool, exhibitions will take place in the former George Henry Lee building, St Johns Market and on Seel Street.
At St Johns, emerging and recently graduated artists from RCA, Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and Liverpool Hope, alongside artists and writers from Urban Sketchers and ROOT-ed Zine, will takeover empty units.
In St Helens, Kate Hodgson will respond to the town’s 150-year anniversary with a series of pop-up print workshops where artists, creatives and residents will be invited to make screen prints for t-shirts, posters, tote bags and tea towels celebrating the town’s industrial past.
Meanwhile, the new commission in Rimrose Valley, Sefton will focus on eco-friendly art – timely as the green space is the site of a proposed multi-million pound expressway.
