Green light expected for Baltic Triangle apartments

Plans to build two new apartment blocks in the Baltic Triangle are expected to be given the go ahead next week (20 December).

The mixed-use scheme, which could create 200 flats alongside space for shops and a restaurant, is being proposed for a car park on Blundell Street.

The two blocks, which are proposed for between seven and nine-storeys, will contain a mix of one, two and three-bedroom homes as well as two levels of car parking with space for 100 cars and 164 bicycles.

The application has been recommended for approval at next week’s Liverpool City Council planning committee meeting despite strong opposition from nearby nightclub 24 Kitchen Street.

According to the planning officer’s report, the owners believe that a residential development at the location is “not appropriate or compatible with their existing nightclub” and that allowing such a development could lead to “undesirable noise impacts on future residents, ultimately leading to complaints and pressure to curtail or control 24 Kitchen Street’s legitimate business activities”.

In response, the report states that the interim head of planning is “satisfied that the proposed use would not unduly affect the operation of 24 Kitchen Street” and that the nightclub’s sound insulation will sufficiently limit “noise break out from the premises”.

The report adds that the development will “contribute towards a sustainable mix of uses in an accessible location, benefiting the local economy by populating the area and assisting with the regeneration of the Baltic Triangle”.
