Birkenhead’s Byrne Avenue Baths will re-open to the public this September as a dynamic new community resource.

The Rock Ferry landmark has undergone extensive renovation works over the last four years – and stage one of the development is now ready to launch this autumn.

A sports hall and community room will be available from September, with more long-term plans including re-opening the original swimming pool and baths and a new café.

Campaigners saved the Grade II-listed building from demolition in 2017. Since then they’ve raised more than £500,000 to begin restoring the baths to its former glory and to create a new space for local people to enjoy.

This past weekend marked the 90th anniversary of the laying of the original foundation stone. To mark the occasion Byrne Avenue Trust, the charity behind the project, is inviting people to find out more about its work. It’s keen to hear from anyone who remembers using the baths or who has photographs and memorabilia to share.

A crowdfunding campaign is also being launched to fund the next stage of the renovation project – a new café on the ground floor, situated in the Gents’ Slipper Baths. Residents and supporters can sign up to pledge funds and receive rewards once the café is open.

Speaking about the plans, Byrne Avenue Trust Chairman, Ben Harrison, says: “We’re really excited to be finally opening our doors in September.

“We want the baths to be a place where local people, of all ages, feel welcome to come and enjoy everything from film nights and ‘knit and natter’ sessions, to badminton, Zumba and indoor football.

“The 90th anniversary feels like a great time to be able to share our plans and the great news about the launch and our crowdfunder.”
