HK Interiors’ Helen Kaufman talks us through the five interior design trends we need to look out for over the next 12 months.

I HAVE PATIENTLY been waiting to share the decor trends coming our way in 2021. I’m always so excited to see the good and the not so good trends! But remember… trends are exactly that – trends! You don’t have to use any of them in your home or defend your style. Just enjoy what you see!

NEUTRALS

The first trend for 2021 is neutrals. They are still going strong! One big shift I see with neutrals is how warmed up they are. Less cold whites and more warm ones. More honey and taupe tones and much less grey. However you will also see more colour in 2021 and greys are not out yet!

BLUES

This is not your mother’s blue. No powdery blue or baby blue. Think moody blues, clear blues and other blues that look sophisticated. We have seen moody blues coming on strong over the last couple of years and they are still at the head of the colour pack.

BLACK AND WHITES

Another classic colour combination is set to make a comeback in the new year. If you love the drama of black and white, 2021 is the year to introduce this colour combination to your home.

But here’s the thing about black and white. You need to commit! Black and white loses its striking effect if mixed with a lot of other colours.

GREY

I said last year that grey would be taking the slow train out of the design scene. But it’s still here! However, we are no longer seeing lots and lots of grey things in a room. To be honest, I think the grey trend was really pushed to the forefront by the design industry.

A little grey goes a long way. I think in a year or so grey will find its rightful place as an accent colour once again.

GOLD ACCENTS

This is another trend which started a couple of years ago and is now everywhere. Gold, not the brass of the ’90s! I love to see gold tones in metals. It’s so on-trend, beautiful and warm. It has taken a couple of decades to recover from the overload of brassy gold that dripped from homes in the ’80s and ’90s.

But slowly we began to see rich gold tones revived and more beautiful than ever. Don’t fret if you still love silver tones like brushed nickel. They are very much still in style but not trendy any more. But that’s okay.

This is one trend you should give a try! Mixing metals is a fabulous way to bring interest and beauty to a room.
