Irish pub The Liffey on Renshaw Street in Liverpool city centre is to re-open this Friday, St. Patrick’s Day, following a £200,000 refurbishment.

Dubliner Steven Crosbie, the pub’s new general manager, promises a night of traditional ceol agus craic – Irish for ‘music and fun’ – with four bands playing throughout the day and evening as the city taps into its extensive Irish roots.

“I once heard Liverpool described as ‘the only Irish city in the world that isn’t actually in Ireland,’ and it’s never more evident than on St Patrick’s Day,” says Steven, who formerly managed Lanigan’s Bar on Ranelagh Street.

“Liverpool people know better than anyone how to tap into their Irish roots and we’re expecting a full house from opening time onwards,” says Steven.

The pub will throw open its doors 11am, with free entry and lots of Irish giveaways.  The first singer, Andy Hodgeson, hits the stage at 4pm, with music running late into the night.

Eight new jobs have been created as the pub gears up for its grand opening night and Steven predicts they’ll be busy pouring the black stuff from the off.

“I’m expecting us to get through around 15 barrels of Guinness, which is roughly one and a half thousand pints,” he adds.

“All the staff have been trained to pour the perfect pint in proper Guinness jars.  Liverpool drinkers are a knowledgeable lot and know that they need to let the pint settle to create that perfect creamy head – tempting as it is to get stuck in immediately!”
