Plans for a new padel centre backed by Jürgen Klopp have been approved by Liverpool City Council’s planning committee, paving the way for the development of a major new sporting venue at Wavertree Sports Park.
The scheme, submitted by Pegasus Group on behalf of Padel FC, will replace underused tennis courts with a facility featuring nine padel courts – six indoors and three sheltered outdoor courts – alongside a café, retail space, changing rooms and social areas.
Founded by Jürgen and Marc Klopp, Padel FC is bringing its first UK centre to Liverpool, following the success of its Berlin operation. The Wavertree project involves local partners Mike Smith of Open Media, former professional footballer Bradley Orr and businessman Carl Spellman.
Designed by Octo Architects, the facility will incorporate solar panels, air source heating and electric vehicle charging points.
The centre aims to make padel, one of Europe’s fastest-growing sports, more accessible to the wider public. It is planned to operate seven days a week, providing a year-round, all-weather destination for players of all ages and abilities.
Darren Muir, senior director – planning, Pegasus Group, says: “Our planning team has advised from the initial tender through pre-application discussions, submission and committee, working closely with the council and design team.
“Alongside that, our economics specialists quantified the scheme’s potential contribution at an estimated £44.2 million in economic and social value over ten years, including substantial health and wellbeing benefits, and 32 full-time jobs.
“Bringing those disciplines together allowed us to make a compelling, evidence-based planning case, demonstrating what this investment could deliver for Liverpool’s economy and the people who will use the venue. We’re proud to have helped the team reach this milestone.”
