Liverpool City Council will hand out its 2016 Citizen of Honour awards – which celebrate individuals who have helped to enrich life in the city – later today (9 May).

This year’s accolades will go to the original manager of The Beatles Allan Williams, veteran voluntary worker Brian Lawless MBE, community activists Kwong Ngan and Roger O’Hara, and medical pioneer Dr Chris Wells.

Allan is being honoured for his contribution to Liverpool’s music scene, while former school governor Brian was recognised for his 40 years of unpaid voluntary service for organisations including Vauxhall Neighbourhood Council, Rice Lane Community Organisation, Rice Lane City Farm and the Walton Advice Centre.

Also known as Kenny Tam, Kwong was named as a Citizen of Honour for his extensive work with Merseyside’s Chinese community. Meanwhile, Roger is being honoured for his community endeavours around the Granby/Toxteth area including work with the Dingle Housing Regeneration Committee, and Chris is being hailed as a pioneer in the field of neurological pain relief.

Roger says: “I was surprised and honoured to be offered this award. In accepting it, I have to recognise the consist help I have received from those around me, especially of my wife Lillian.”

Lord Mayor of Liverpool Tony Concepcion will hand out the awards during a ceremony at the Town Hall.

Cllr Concepcion, says: “I am delighted to be able to pay tribute to the latest recipients of the Citizen of Honour awards for making an outstanding contribution to Liverpool life.

“Their selfless hard work and commitment in each of their chosen fields has made a huge difference to Liverpool and helped put the city on the map.”
