Liverpool entertainers rally support for refugees

Comedian John Bishop will host a fundraising concert at Liverpool’s Echo Arena in support of refugees, it has been announced.

Tickets have gone on sale today for the ‘With Love From Liverpool’ event on 19 September, which will bring a line-up of musical acts to the city stage.

All profits from the show will be donated to British Red Cross to help families desperately fleeing from war, and performers who have been added to the bill so far include The Farm, OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark), John Power and members of CAST, Space, The Icicle Works and Sense of Sound.

Further artists will be confirmed in the coming days for the concert, which will also see BBC Radio 2 broadcaster Janice Long take on hosting duties alongside John Bishop.

Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson says: “When it comes to reaching out and offering solidarity to the families whose homes have been ripped away from them, Liverpool is leading the way. Now, Liverpool is stepping up to the plate once more with the ‘With Love From Liverpool’ concert. We’re using our reputation for world-class music to now help save lives across the globe.”

John Bishop adds: “It will be a great night for a great cause. We can’t all physically put our arms around those we have seen suffering, but by coming to enjoy a night’s entertainment, every person there will be helping the Red Cross reach out and provide the compassion we all feel.”

The concert is the latest of several events to be organised in support of those affected by the refugee crisis.

Elsewhere, the Baltic Triangle’s 24 Kitchen Street will host the Liverpool to Calais Fundraiser on 17 September to help boost funds and donations of much needed items being collected locally for those in need.

With Abandon Silence’s Andrew Hill joining acts and DJs on the night including the likes of Between the Borders musicians, GonNam, Hot Plate DJs and more, all door money, donations and a cut of bar proceeds will help the cause.

Meanwhile, No Alternative – An Evening for Syria will take place on 25 September, also at 24 Kitchen Street, bringing live music from the likes of The Springtime Anchorage, Silent Sleep, Marvin Powell, By the Sea, Dave McCabe & The Ramifications and an acoustic set by The Sundowners; as well as DJ sets from The Coral, Liquidation DJs and Bill Ryder-Jones.

Further acts are still to be added to the benefit gig, being held in aid of UNICEF’s Children of Syria Fund and Asylum Link Merseyside, which will also feature street food, guest speakers, a raffle and collection points for donations of supplies.
