Liverpool’s Three Queens spectacular planning underway

Plans for the historic visit of Cunard’s Three Queens, the trio of massive cruise liners, to Liverpool are well underway, according to the team behind the ambitious celebration of the city’s maritime history.

The 150,000 tonne Queen Mary 2 will be joined by her sister ships the Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth for the first time on the River Mersey to celebrate the iconic Cunard company’s 175th anniversary. However, having three such vast cruise ships on the same stretch of river will take extensive planning.

Captain Steve Gallimore, the Port of Liverpool harbour master, says: “The planning is at a very advanced stage and the sight of the Cunard Queens together off Pier Head and elsewhere in the river will create a striking and lasting impression for spectators and those watching the coverage all over the world. Managing the navigation of ships the size of the Cunard Queens in the Mersey is challenging. This makes the detailed planning and co-ordination involving the Commodore so essential.”

The event is expected to bring in one million visitors to the city and Commodore Rynd, commodore of the Cunard fleet, adds: “With the unique backdrop of Liverpool’s world-famous waterfront, and the capacity on both sides of the Mersey to accommodate tens of thousands of spectators, I believe this will be a most spectacular gathering of the Three Queens. I am excited by the prospect of bringing the Fleet to its spiritual home and I am impressed by the level of engagement and collaboration between the partners involved to make it all possible.”

The visit of the ships on May 2015 is one of several waterfront celebrations next year, which also include Wayne Hemingway, creative director of another river celebration summer 2015, who will be leading a team to honour the first cruise crossing of the Atlantic with a festival and a recreation of the cruise.
