An exhibition looking at the Mesoamerican civilization of the ancient Maya will open in the World Museum in Liverpool next week.

The free exhibition, called Mayas: revelation to an endless time, will open on 19 June and run until 18 October, and includes 385 objects including a stone ball court ring found in Chicen Itza and a golden frog symbolising the Mayans close links between amphibians. The exhibition will open with a visit from Miguel Angel Trinidad, deputy director of International Exhibitions, Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), the organisation dedicated to promoting and preserving Mexican heritage.

The ambassador of Mexico, Diego Gomez-Pickering, says: “Undoubtedly this exhibition will unveil mesmerizing details about the Mayan civilization, but also will showcase to every visitor the value of Mexico’s history and the great diversity of its cultural roots.”

There will be a programme of free events throughout the exhibition including a celebration weekend in July which will see Mexican folk dancers, traditional music, workshops for schools, craft activities and talks by professionals.

The exhibition comes as the UK celebrates the Year of Mexico.
