Liverpool’s Unity Theatre could receive up to £120,000 of capital funding to finance its refurbishment programme.

The cash boost is expected to be discussed in Friday’s cabinet meeting (8 April).

Unity theatre is currently funded through the Culture Liverpool Investment Programme (CLIP) and recently raised £430,000 from Arts Council England (ACE) to fund a programme of capital works.

The £120,000 grant would come from the Liverpool City Council Capital Funding Programme and would be distributed to the Unity Theatre as a one-off payment.

The project will allow both of the theatre’s auditorium spaces to be used concurrently opening up further opportunities for community theatre as well as creating new jobs.

The report set to be discussed by the cabinet suggests that the plan set out for the capital grant “offers good value for money, reducing a funded organisation’s reliance on Liverpool City Council funding at a crucial time.”

The report adds: “In the mid to long term it will improve the financial viability of a successful and renowned Liverpool theatre”.

Both the cabinet member for culture, tourism and events, and the cabinet member for regeneration, transport and climate change support the proposal.

The grant also has mayoral recommendation.
