The next government must do more to help younger buyers to step onto the property ladder, according to a Liverpool conveyancer.

Angela Hesketh, head of property at city law firm Jackson Canter, currently finds young home buying clients are facing a struggle to secure enough support from lenders to afford their ideal properties.

With this year’s General Election approaching on 7 May, Angela says: “The party gaining power needs to build a significant number of new properties for the younger market. These homes need to be affordable and enable the market to become more buoyant.”

Commenting on the common problems her clients are experiencing, she adds: “Lending is difficult because the loan to value ratios have meant that customers struggle to get money. This in turn means buyers are having to ask family for the deposit more and more.”

With each of the main parties proposing more house building should they win the forthcoming election, Angela says: “What is refreshing is the recognition that there is a real need for new housing stock across all parties and hopefully this means that peoples’ wish to become home owners can become a reality.”
