Museums in Liverpool are revealing their secrets on Twitter this week as part of the Museums Week on the social networking site. From Tate Liverpool to the World Museum, we have rounded up the best museums to follow to get the inside track on the city’s thriving museum community, along with some interesting facts about each one. You can follow Museums Week using the hashtag #museumsweek.
Tate Liverpool
Tate Liverpool, which has boasted knockout exhibitions featuring Andy Warhol and Mondrian in the past 12 months, has welcomed its surrealist Leonora Carrington exhibition with some interesting facts about the museum. For example, did you know the museum has a ‘hidden’ third floor not open to visitors? Or that 10,000 frames have been hung for over 200 exhibitions? Or that up to 4,400 litres of paint have been used each year to prepare gallery walls for new exhibitions.
Leonora Carrington at Tate Liverpool runs from 6 March to 31 May.
Victoria Gallery
The Victoria Gallery and Museum Liverpool at the University of Liverpool has a variety of collections ranging from wince-inducing Victorian dental surgery to fine art. The museum is getting interactive on Twitter, asking members of the public to reveal their memories of the museum and posting images of the grand interior before it became a museum.
Every Tuesday you can take a guided tour of the museum from 12.30pm.

Mersey Maritime Museum
The Mersey Maritime Museum is a gem of the spectacular Albert Dock. Focusing on Liverpool’s incredible maritime history, it has featured exhibitions including a look at the Titanic’s maiden voyage. It is currently hosting an intriguing exhibition looking at another doomed ship, the Lusitania, whose sinking had repercussions across the world. The museum has tweeted a particularly poignant image from the tragedy – a child’s shoe – to showcase the very human side of the tragedy. The Lusitania exhibition runs from 27 March onwards.

Museum of Liverpool
The waterfront Musuem of Liverpool tells the tale of the city like no other; with stunning exhibitions looking at everything from life in Liverpool to the city’s sporting and musical history. There’s even a full-size Liver Bird in pride of place and plenty of craft days for the kids.
The Museum of Liverpool has used Museums Week to showcase the interior workings of a world class museum, with a blog about how the many exhibits are cleaned to allow them to be gleaming for visitors.
World Museum
The World Museum offers an eclectic mix of exhibitions from Egyptian mummies to Japanese Samauri. With a fantastic Maya exhibition on its way, the museum is revealed some interesting tidbits about its inner workings, including information about the 200 botanical plant models it has in its collection stores.
Maya will open from June to October 2015 and will be free to enter.
