New skate park opens in Liverpool

A Liverpool skateboard, BMX and scooter park will open in Otterspool tomorrow (Thursday 21 May) with a team of professional riders showcasing their talent.

The £185,000 park, which was designed with the help of 1,000 young people, will host professional skateboarders and BMX riders who will showcase a series of tricks at the park.

Named Wheelscape, the state-of-the-art skate park comprises a series of ramps and slides in a concrete bowl. It will host competitions for young people from local schools and youth organisations, according to Mayor Joe Anderson.

He says: “These sports have shown a great growth in popularity over the last few years with lots of young people participating. But there were no designated facilities in the city for them to develop their skills.

“We’ve listened to our young people who told us not only what they wanted but where the sites should be and what should be in them. They have been very heavily involved in their design and worked closely with the contractors.

“We promised young people we would not only listen to them but deliver on what they told us – and the new hub is proof that we have done that.”

Similar parks are being built in Everton Park, Garston and Newsham Park and a site at Scargreen opened last year.
