Parts of the Futurist’s façade were salvaged when demolition work was carried out on the historic Liverpool cinema.
Contractors began dismantling the picture house building on Tuesday (9 August), but a council spokesperson confirms that pieces of its art deco signage and pediment were preserved.
The Futurist had to be demolished to make way for Neptune Developments’ £39 million regeneration of Lime Street, which will see a new hotel, shops and student accommodation built on the site.
Liverpool City Council is in discussions with the developer to establish whether parts salvaged from the Futurist can be incorporated into the revamp.
A council spokesman tells Your Move: “We have saved some parts of it such as the Picture House lettering/sign and the pediment and are in discussions with Neptune to see if it can be incorporated in the design.”
The demolition work was initially delayed by a campaign to save the Futurist from non-profit organisation SAVE Britain’s Heritage, which took the case to the Court of Appeal.
The drawn-out legal battle reached its conclusion earlier this week when judges threw out the case and backed the regeneration of Lime Street.
