A park in the Liverpool City Region is holding a pack-a-picnic event to celebrate diversity and challenge homophobic hate crime.

The Rainbow Picnic in the Park will take place at Victoria Park in St Helens on Saturday 3 September between 12 and 5pm.

Organised by St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, the event will celebrate lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transsexual culture with a range of free activities.

The programme will include live music from local bands, face painting and a fun run. Tea and coffee will be available to purchase on site, but alcohol will not be permitted at the park.

St Helens Council’s cabinet member for public health and wellbeing, Councillor Jeanie Bell, says: “Rainbow Picnic in the Park is all about coming together to celebrate with our LGBT community and show that St Helens is rich in culture and diversity.

“Health services and the council are keen to build relationships with all members of our community and ensure that services promote equality. We want to send a positive message of inclusivity to people of all ages. We hope to build new friendships and networks of support – all while enjoying a picnic and live music in beautiful surroundings.”
