Plaques will be unveiled in Liverpool today (21 November) commemorating 100 years since women were given the right to vote.

They’ll feature a quote written by Liverpool Schools’ Parliament pupils, which says: “A vote is not a cross in a box. It is a tool to empower a population and change lives. May the ideals of these women live on.”

Set to be displayed at Liverpool Town Hall and Blackburne house, the plaques will acknowledge the part Merseyside women played in bringing about female suffrage.

One of the plaques will be unveiled at Blackburne House.

The Liverpool Town Hall plaque will also feature a quote from the late community activist and councillor Margaret Simey, which states: “The magic of Liverpool is that it isn’t England.”

Meanwhile the words of Liverpool-born suffragette Kate Sheppard (main picture) will adorn the Blackburne House plaque, saying: “All that separates, whether of race, class, creed or sex, is inhuman and must be overcome.”

Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Christine Banks, says: “It is incredible to think now that women had to fight to secure permission to exercise a basic democratic right, but fight they had to.

“It is really important that we never forget their extraordinary heroism and bravery in securing not just the right to vote, but also to enable women to stand for Parliament.

“The plaques will stand as a permanent reminder of their achievements which benefited women around the world and paved the way for further equal rights and gender equality.”
