The team behind Red Door’s Chester bar have been looking for a new opportunity on Merseyside. And with the new bar opening on Berry Street this week after months of preparation, it seems the team have found the perfect match in Liverpool’s city centre.

We went along to the opening night of the new bar to find out what the team behind Life Cafe in the 1990s, have for Liverpool in 2015.

As we entered the former Metropolitan pub, we were greeted to the rustic interiors and the impressive selection of speciality gins, rums and tequilas that adorn huge wall behind the bar. The first floor, one of four, where we sat benefits from a variety of booths and pillars that adds a level of intimacy to the Red Door; even when it’s busy you can tuck yourself away in the corner for cocktails and deep discussions.

That brings us up to the reason to visit the Red Door: cocktails. For the launch night, the team were offering out Strawberry Bellinis to guests, adorned with sweet strawberries. For those who don’t like their drinks too sweet, gin and tonics were on offer with coriander and orange slices replacing the traditional lemon or lime wedge, adding a refreshing change to a tried and tested classic.

The drinks menu requires some serious studying in order to make a decision with what to drink. The House list is a move away from the standard cocktail list, with stand outs including ‘Rhudimental’, which features home-made rhubarb and custard tequila, and the ‘CBGB’, which is basil, chilli, lime juice and tequila and served with a pizza spice rim. The staff encourage you to ask for your favourite if it’s not on the menu, but with such an extensive list of different flavours, the Red Door is a good place to go out of your comfort zone.

The music was an eclectic mix, moving from Aretha Franklin and Fleetwood Mac, to Kasabian and the Strokes in a few song changes. The evening featured live music too: Chester based band Universal Export played on the stage set up at the back of the bar, in front of the wall adorned with a Red Door sign and red candle holders with flickering tea lights.

The venue was buzzing, and the staff were on point all evening to ensure you were never empty handed. The Red Door is perfect for after work drinks and with prime position on Berry Street, this will be a firm favourite on anyone’s bar list.
