Rotunda plans ‘Folly’ upgrade

Kirkdale community centre Rotunda has unveiled plans for an upgrade to its giant steel sculpture, known locally as the ‘Folly’.

The North Liverpool cultural hub, which offers a range of facilities including alternative education for young people, counselling and legal advice, wants to create a focal point for the existing installation.

According to a planning application submitted to Liverpool City Council, the proposed development will see an all-weather fixed ‘Green Roof’ attached to the east elevation of The Folly.

The Rotunda Square Pavillion, as it will be known, will be used as a community venue for culture and well-being activities and make use of solar energy for light and heating.

The Folly was the only piece of public artwork commissioned in North Liverpool for Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year in 2008.

The £250,000 steel structure is located in an area of open space in front of the Rotunda on Great Mersey Street.

The charity is currently trying to raise £50,000 to purchase the land on which the Folly is located to ensure that the sculpture can remain in its current location.

Maxine Ennis, chief executive officer at Rotunda, says: “We are absolutely confident that we will not be moving anytime soon.

“A whole new garden will be developed around the Folly thanks to funders, sponsors and local residents support.”
