Screenadelica at Nook & Cranny review

The days of a flagship store such as Waterstone’s wonderfully quirky time-sink at the bottom of Bold Street are at an end. But while the Lyceum opposite remains steadfastly vacant there does seem to be life in this end of the street after all.

In keeping with the newfound independent and bohemian nature of the street, the new top destination for shoppers is Nook & Cranny, all grown up after its success in the arty Bluecoat and ready to take to the more mainstream destination.

Nook & Cranny calls itself a craft and homeware store but it really is much more. Its hand-crafted creations are selected from the best UK artists and the creativity of the team makes the shop floor look more like an art exhibition. Perfect for Mother’s Day and Easter gifts and cards, or that finishing touch to a new home, it’s a shop that warrants a ten-minute excursion on your lunch hour or at weekends.

However, that is only half the story. At the back of the shop is a small, brick-walled and beautifully-decorated space suitably labeled ‘The Nook’. This is where Nook & Cranny delivers an eclectic mix of pop-up events from a restaurant night featuring vegetarian favourite Egg Café to life drawing classes.

There’s even a coffee shop from Quill Coffee, the independent that is also based in Rex Concept Store in Rapid’s basement – and a must-visit for Liverpool coffee lovers.

Venture in before the 26 March and you will see the travelling Screenadelica exhibition, a free-to-view selection of art based on gig posters. Some original, some commissioned for Screendelica, the posters are an eclectic mix of worldwide stars suh as Snoop Dogg and popular local choices such as Sound City and Dan Croll.

Screenadelica actually began at Sound City 2010 and has since travelled the world, commissioning new posters and offering artists a chance to exhibit their talents. The impressive screen printing techniques, bold designs of the posters and wide range of events and artists make for a fun, accessible art exhibition – all in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere.

If you’re on Bold Street over the next few days, pop in to Nook & Cranny, enjoy a coffee from Quills and take a look art the art on show. All of the posters are available to buy, so if anything catches your eye you can take it home with you.

Whether you’re in to music or art, or both, this is one not to be missed.
