Haggis, whiskey, music and dance will be supplied to guests celebrating Burns Night in Liverpool in 2015, as St George’s Hall reveals plans for three national-themed dance celebrations.
The first dance will take place on Saturday 31 January to celebrate Scotland’s favourite poet, Robert Burns. The night will be a Scottish themed mass ceilidh in the Great Hall. And no Burns Night is complete without traditional Scottish food, so haggis and stew will be served during the evening. However, organisers say kilts are optional for the event, which will be followed by similar themed events for St Patrick’s Day and St George’s Day.
Cabinet member for culture and tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon says: “This is a fantastic idea for the New Year and the great thing is you be complete beginner and still master most of the steps. Dancing is an enjoyable way to meet new people and get plenty of exercise while having fun, and what better setting than our own Great Hall.
“I hope we can encourage as many people as possible to come along and have a go, and with three different events taking place there really is something to suit everyone.”
Live music will be provided by The Liverpool Country Dance Band, with two instructors who will teach everyone the steps. Alongside Burns Night, there will be an Irish ceilidh on Friday 20 March to celebrate St Patrick’s Day and there will be a celebratory barn dance and square dance to celebrate St George’s Day on Friday 24 April.
Speciality food and drink will be available at each event.
