Wavertree Garden Suburb green space to go under the hammer

A grassed area in Wavertree Garden Suburb known as Fieldway Green is to go under the hammer tomorrow (28 March).

The 20,000 sq ft space at the end of Fieldway, off Thingwall Road, has a guide price of £5,000 for the Sutton Kersh auction at the Crowne Plaza hotel.

A village green application has been made for the land, which the auction house refers to as “the roundabout at the end of Fieldway”.

The Wavertree Society, which was founded in 1977 protect the Wavertree Village and Wavertree Garden Suburb conservation areas, contends that Fieldway Green is one of the “key features” of the picturesque area.

Wavertree Garden Suburb was originally envisaged as a community and developed by a co-partnership company in which the tenants of the houses were shareholders.

The intention was that the estate should include as many as 1,800 houses but only 360 had been built before the First World War brought development to a halt.

Cathy Holt, associate director of Sutton Kersh, hopes the winning bidder can donate the green space to charity.

Cathy says: “Marie Curie has the Field of Hope, perhaps the roundabout could be transformed into something like that.

“Not only would it then serve a charitable purpose, it would benefit those who live around it and protect the area for the neighbouring community to enjoy.”

The Wavertree Society says that the green has been a “vital part” of Wavertree Garden Suburb’s character since 1971 when it was designated as a conservation area.

A post on the charity’s website reads: “We continue to believe that a public auction is not the way to determine the future of this land.

“For over 100 years, now, it has been a community asset. In recent years, in spite of the green being in private ownership, the surrounding residents have organised and paid for its upkeep, including the mowing of the grass and the trimming of the hedges.

“It would be unfortunate, to say the least, if it were to fall into the hands of someone who is unaware of its history, or unaware of the responsibilities of ownership.”
