Work has begun on a £10.8m development to create 70 new Extra Care homes and facilities at the historic Watch Factory site in Prescott.

Knowsley Housing Trust (KHT) is working with partners Illiad, Knowsley Council and Harbur Construction to build 54 one and two-bedroom apartments and 10 two-bedroom bungalows for over 55s with varying care needs.

The 6.75-acre site on Albany Road, which was the headquarters of the Lancashire Watch Company from 1889 until 1910, will see the Grade II-listed structures retained and other areas cleared to make way for the development.

The first six two-bedroom bungalows will be sold by Oriel, which like KHT is part of the First Ark Group. The homes will be available under shared ownership, which means 25% to 75% of the property can be purchased.

Ian Thomson, executive director at KHT, sys: “Our new site at Albany Road is steeped with rich heritage and it’s a real achievement for our local communities that we can celebrate and retain the legacy of the Lancashire Watch Company whilst at the same time building much needed accessible homes for our older people who have Extra Care needs.”

The first phase will be followed by a £6m second phase that will see another 62 homes built and offered under shared ownership and outright sale.
