Eco homes to transform derelict Walton site

Work has started on 58 new affordable eco-homes in Walton at the site of a former Dunlop factory.

In total 45 two-bedroom homes and 13 three-bedroom properties will be built on the land on Hazeldale Road, which has lain empty for 15 years. The work will provide affordable homes for families North Liverpool and is part of plans to build 554 affordable homes across the city.

Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH) is behind the development and plans to install a host of eco-friendly features in the homes, including state-of-the-art boilers, double-glazing and wall and loft insulation.

Assistant Director of Development at LMH, Chris Bowen, says: “The homes will be of modern design, warm, secure and the sustainable features will reduce fuel bills, giving people more money in their pockets.

“The work is expected to be finished in approximately a year-and-a-half and is further evidence of our commitment to addressing the housing shortage in the city.”

MCI Developments is building the homes and is now on site. Director Gary Humphreys has described the homes as ‘urban regeneration at its best’, adding that the site was a ‘blot on the local landscape’ and will now be brought back to life.

Cllr Ann O’Byrne, Cabinet Member for Housing at Liverpool City Council, adds: “This scheme is bringing back into use an empty piece of land that has blighted the area for many years and is creating much-needed good quality affordable housing.”
