Call for young fundraisers to ‘sleepout’ for charities

Children and young people can help two Liverpool charities this spring when a ‘sleepout’ event takes place in the city.

The Whitechapel Centre has joined forces with Liverpool Cathedral for to host a night time challenge inside the iconic landmark on 2 April, which will raise funds to help end homelessness and also repair the cathedral roof.

The sleepout will aim to give willing young participants an understanding of the difficult situation people face when they find themselves homeless, while also offering an opportunity for them to show support when many other charity events are targeted towards adults.

Ruth McCaughley, fundraising manager at The Whitechapel Centre, says: “We’re delighted to be able to put on this event, which is raising funds for both The Whitechapel Centre and Liverpool Cathedral. “It’s a safe environment but gives young people the opportunity to understand a little more about homelessness.

“The cathedral is such a wonderful building but it too needs help to keep the doors open and the roof repaired.”

Fundraisers joining in the 7.30pm until 6am event must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over and will be encouraged to bring pyjamas, materials to build a den, and a puzzle, with a prize being given for the best den.

The event follows the success of The Whitechapel Centre’s annual fundraising Liverpool Sleepout, which sees adults sleep outdoors for a night in a stewarded area in the grounds of St Nick’s Church on the Strand.
