The Whitechapel Centre and Liverpool Cathedral joined forces on Saturday (2 April) to host a fundraising sleepout.

The cathedral was filled with over 300 people to raise funds to help end homelessness and repair the cathedral roof.

Families camped out overnight in cardboard dens to give young people a first-hand experience of the struggles faced by those affected by homelessness.

Participants were asked to bring pyjamas, sleeping bags and materials to build a den, but were asked to leave electronic devices behind in order to gain a true experience of a world without technology.

Ruth McCaughley, fundraising manager at The Whitechapel Centre, says: “The event went really well, it was fantastic to see so many people supporting the Whitechapel Centre and Liverpool Cathedral, we hope that it will raise over £20,000 for the two charities.

“We had over 300 people (from age one upwards) sleeping overnight, some in sleeping bags on the floor and others in fantastic cardboard creations. Most people managed to get some sleep but it certainly wasn’t comfortable!”
