How to celebrate 2015 Chinese New Year in Liverpool

Chinese New Year 2015 in Liverpool will take place on Sunday 22 February, and to celebrate the Year of the Goat, Chinese community groups and venues around the city have arranged a series of arts and cultural events to welcome the eight animal signs of the Chinese Zodiac.

 

Chinatown

For the traditional parade and creative fireworks, head straight to Chinatown for the best of the activities.

22 February

11am Chinese New Year Market at Great George Street

12pm The Dragon and Lion Street Parades in Chinatown

1pm Firecracker display at Great George Square

 

Pagoda Arts

Pagoda Arts and its unique Chinese Youth orchestra will be showcasing their rehearsals and performing culture open days in the lead up to the big event on 22 February.

16 February – 8 March

Chinese New Year Exhibition: Learn about different aspects of Chinese New Year including the paintings, symbols, animals and the significance of wearing Chinese knots in the New Year.

18 February

Chinese culture tour: Watch the award winning youth orchestra rehearse for their performance on Sunday and learn about the local history of Chinatown and specifically the Chinese Labour Corps during WW1.

22 February

Chinese New Year Performance: Featuring performances by the youth orchestra, tai chi and dance.

 

National Museums Liverpool

As Chinese New Year falls within half-term, the National Museums are putting on different events and activities to keep children occupied. All Museum events are free.

14 February

Museum of Liverpool

The Liverpool Confucius Institute from the University of Liverpool will be holding Chinese Spring Festival celebrations, with traditional Chinese music, calligraphy demonstrations and Tai Chi martial art performances.

14 & 15 February

World Museum

Make your own Chinese lantern to take home.

19 February

Merseyside Maritime Museum

Chinese martial arts demonstration and the opportunity to create your own dancing dragon.

19 – 21 February

Lady Lever Art Gallery

Chinese New Year celebrations, with craft activities, stories and performances.

 

The Black-E

Contemporary arts is hosting several different events in celebration.

21 February

The Liverpool Chinese Table Tennis Club will be on hand for you try your hand against them, along with mask making and circus workshops with The Black-E circus instructors. Free.

22 February

See the dancing Lion up close and get to try to head on for size too. You can also take part in authentic Chinese storytelling, Chinese calligraphy and watch performances from The Black-E Youth Circus. Entry fee: Adults £2, Children £1.
