The Liverpool performing arts hub creating the next generation of theatre stars

Performing on stage is a dream career for many young people and Liverpool Central Studios is on a mission to help talented dancers, singers and actors to fulfil their ambitions.

The centre of excellence, which brings together Liverpool Theatre School and Studio 76, provides coaching for performers as young as four right through to full-time professional training for students over 16.

Liverpool Central Studios is headed up by former professional dancer, Maxine Ellis, whose students have gone on to land starring roles in hit shows such as Wicked, Les Miserables, Cilla and Blood Brothers.

Speaking about the success of graduates, she explains: “Training at Liverpool Central Studios is as much about preparing for life as a performer as it is about developing the technical skills required to make it in the industry.

“Many of our students have gone on to become professional dancers or they have been cast in high profile shows and it’s always a real joy to watch them perform.

“We’re fortunate enough to have an exceptionally talented team of teachers at Liverpool Central Studios, including Dane Bates and Jessica Jones, who have both choreographed dancers in the current series of BBC1’s The Greatest Dancer.

“We also frequently organise workshops, which are led by some of the industry’s most respected guest teachers.

“All of our students are involved in regular performances and those on our Diploma courses are also given an opportunity to showcase their skills on the West End stage in front of an audience of industry influencers and talent scouts.

“Our graduating students always find this experience extremely beneficial and it’s a great way for them to build contacts in the industry.”

When it comes to funding, the cost of course fees can make professional performing arts training seem out of reach for some but Maxine is determined to make training opportunities accessible to all talented young performers.

She explains: “The ethos behind Liverpool Central Studios is to make the highest standard of training available to all performers who have talent, ambition and passion, whatever their financial circumstances.

“Most performing arts schools charge prospective students between £45 & £80 just to audition for a place but all auditions at Liverpool Central Studios are free to attend.

“Our students come from many different backgrounds and I firmly believe that young performers with talent should never be held back because of their financial situation.

“We offer a number of funded places for exceptionally talented students, including the Andrew Lloyd Webber scholarship and the Dance and Drama Awards (DaDA), so there is financial support available.”

Liverpool Central Studios is the only stage school in the country to offer Diplomas validated by Trinity College London across all three disciplines of Professional Musical Theatre, Professional Acting and Professional Dance.

A real hub for nurturing young talent, Liverpool Central Studios also offers BTEC courses in Performing Arts, Dance and Musical Theatre, as well as a range of weekend and evening classes.

Located on the edge of the Creative Quarter, Liverpool Central Studios features five state of the art dance studios, an Acropad studio, two acting studios and three singing studios.

Liverpool Central Studios is currently on the look out for talented performers and auditions for full-time professional training courses, starting this September, are taking place on 28 March, 9 May and 20 June.
