A new bar could open in the former Mello Mello building, after an application for an alcohol license was submitted.

Mello Mello’s base on Slater Street, which was formerly the HQ of Cream, has been earmarked for development and a London-based company called Rose Eight Limited has submitted an application for a license to supply alcohol between 9am and 4am on Monday to Sunday. The application also includes a regulated entertainment license, which covers live and recorded music and other events such as film screenings and indoor sports.

The application is for 40 – 42 Slater Street – the former Mello Mello venue – as well as the adjoining 38 Slater Street. However, no plans have been submitted for the conversion of the building to-date. It is not known if the venue will serve food alongside its drink license.

The popular Ropewalks community hub closed its doors six months before it had originally planned as the community interest company behind the venue faced high business rates. It was a popular venue for live music, community events, vegetarian and vegan food and practice rooms on the upper floors.

Mello Mello closed in September 2014, several months before it had originally intended, after citing business rates and a string of burglaries as the cause of the financial pressure on the company. It opened in 2007 and was volunteer-run before it closed its doors.
