A spectacular light show will illuminate Liverpool’s iconic waterfront buildings to welcome Cunard’s Three Queens to the Mersey in May.

Preparations are underway for the once-in-a-lifetime event, when all three of the ‘monarchs’ will arrive on the Mersey at the same time on 25 May, and the celebration weekend between 23-25 May to welcome the ships will include a state-of-the-art projection show beamed directly onto some of the city’s most famous waterfront buildings.

Part of the show includes a ‘Sea of Faces’ made up of hundreds of people who live, work and visit the city, says The Colour Project, which is behind the projections. It is working with arts organisation Hope Street Limited to create the event and will announce details on how people can take part in the spring.

The event will be part of the Three Queens’ visit to celebrate 175 years of the Cunard line. Assistant Mayor and Cabinet Member for culture and tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon, says: “In every sense of the word, we had a giant year last year in terms of our event programme, and Liverpool is maintaining that momentum as we prepare for yet another momentous year for the city.

“There’s still five months to go before the three monarchs of the sea head for the River Mersey, and yet there is already an air of excitement about their arrival, not just in the city but across the UK and the rest of the world.”

A six-week events programme taking place after the event includes a celebration of the first transatlantic voyage of Britannia in 1840 on 4 July, when designer Wayne Hemingway directs a weekend of celebration to honour the history of cruise travel. Further details of the programme will be announced closer to the date.
