Tens of thousands of visitors are expected to arrive in the city this weekend for the annual Liverpool International Mersey River Festival.

Liverpool’s waterfront will be awash with ships, stages and activities for all the family, whilst Music on the Waterfront will provide live entertainment over the three day event.

Assistant Mayor and Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Events, Councillor Wendy Simon, says: “It’s been a busy couple of weeks for our World Heritage Waterfront and we’re still riding high on the massive success of the Three Cunard Queens weekend, so it feels like great timing for yet another maritime celebration!

“We know there is a real appetite for events which have a focus on the River, and once again we expect tens of thousands of visitors to spend time at the Pier Head and the Albert Dock making the most of the free activities on offer.

The event includes tall ships, yachts and canal boats, along with the return of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines at Graving Dock which will display helicopters, diving tanks and weapons. Brouhaha International will also return this year with their homecoming parade at 11am on Sunday 7 June.

Have-a-go water sport sessions and street theatre workshops will also take place across the weekend, along with a Raft Race on the Sunday (7 June).

Liverpool will also play host to the first ever Northern Boat show over the weekend, with a line-up of power boats, cruisers, narrow boats and sail boats.

The weekend includes BBC Music Day on the Friday (5 June) including DJ Craig Charles and special guests from 4-11pm. Saturday will see acts such as Collabro and Sam Bailey perform, with special guests David Gest and Kim Marsh, and Sunday with showcase Liverpool’s home-grown talent with the likes of Rebecca Ferguson and The Hummingbirds.
