I OFTEN SEE PEOPLE IN THE GYM and can tell they look a bit lost, unsure what they should be doing or if they’re doing it right. Believe me, we’ve all been there.
Even those people you look at and envy as they seem to be flying through all had to start somewhere. So over the next few months, I am going to take you through four different exercises concentrating on one body part, making sure your technique is correct and you’re getting the most from your workout.
Remember it’s not about spending hours on end in the gym. Quality over quantity. This month we will be concentrating on core exercises.
I see a lot of people who suffer lower back pain and have poor posture due to having a weak core when it’s easier to strengthen than you might think.
Your core stabilises your whole body, allowing you to move in any direction as well as controlling your balance. It can help prevent falls and gives your body support.
Try doing these four exercises three to five times each week, and see how you feel after a few weeks. They are so easy but very effective, and can be done at home so there’s no excuse if you can’t make it into the gym!
DO THE FOUR EXERCISES BELOW TO THE TIME OR REPS GIVEN AND REPEAT FOUR TIMES:
1. PLANK
Hold for 30secs (beginners) or one minute for intermediate and advanced. Ensure your body is in a straight line and your bum is not pointing to the ceiling, or your back is caving down.
2. LEG RAISES 25 reps
Hands under your bum and lift your legs up so they are in line with your hips. Slowly lower and do not let your feet touch the floor. Let them go as low as they can before they do.
3. TOE TOUCHES 25 reps
Legs still in the air (straight as possible), arms all the way over your head and touch up to your feet – taking your body up with you without letting the legs move.
4. FULL SIT UPS 25 reps
Feet under knees and hip-width apart. Fully sit up. If you find it too hard to get all the way up, wedge your feet under something or put a weight between them to help you up.
If performed properly, you will definitely feel the benefits of this short workout. This can be performed by any age and any level. Holly x
