Liverpool Lantern Company has launched a crowdfunding initiative to help raise enough money to stage a three-night festival next spring at Liverpool’s Festival Gardens.

Next year’s event will feature lantern artwork produced by community groups and young people, as well as huge puppets and other remarkable creations from the in-house professional artist team.

Open for four hours each evening, the festival gardens site will be converted into a strange wonderland with plenty of thought-provoking pieces for visitors to interact with including a sectree woodland and waterway route with giant insects and live music.

Jo Pocock, artistic director of the Lantern Company, says : “Lantern Carnival is all about community participation and we want to retain that element as we develop to a three day event.

“Although the event will feature the same work on each of the three nights, the idea is to allow our audiences to have more intimate experiences and chance encounters as they wander through the grounds – so in theory you might have a different experience from one night to the next”

Usually held around Halloween in Sefton Park, the carnival has been postponed this year but the organisers intend to return with a Halloween date in 2016.

Asked whether the spring festival will run alongside the Halloween Lantern show in the future, Jo says: “I think we’ll need to see how the spring event goes, and then make our decisions – but we’re all very excited about trying out something completely new”

The company is looking to raise £10,000 from a campaign on the Indiegogo website and is asking for contributions from as little as £3.

Similar to many Indiegogo campaigns, supporters who donate will get access to a variety of perks including limited edition t-shirts and priority tickets to the festival.

All the cash which is donated will be put towards the costs of hosting the event at Liverpool’s Festival Gardens between 18 – 20 February 2016.
