A new 24-hour gym could be heading to St John’s Shopping Centre.

InfraRed, the owner of St John’s, is seeking planning permission to covert the use of part of Poundland on the first floor in preparation for a new tenant.

The proposed occupier, Anytime Fitness, is a 24-hour fitness franchise with 106 facilities currently operating in the UK.

According to a planning document included in the application by InfraRed, it’s envisaged that access to the gym will be provided via the walkway which connects the rear of the Poundland to Lime Street.

The extent of the proposed gym unit has not yet been agreed.

The document adds: “The proposed use of the unit will encourage additional investment, improve the diversity of uses and increase the footfall of the centre.

“Therefore, the proposal seeks to enhance the vitality and viability of the area and assist in encouraging further use of this part of the city centre outside normal operating hours.”

InfraRed, which acquired Liverpool’s largest covered shopping centre in 2012, has completed a series of updates to the centre in recent years including a £2.5 million upgrade of the ground floor food court.
